Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance Receives $150,000 Housing for Everyone Grant from TD Charitable Foundation

Support from the TD Charitable Foundation will help MHSA Expand Permanent Supportive Housing Across Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, May 21, 2024 – Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA) a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending homelessness in Massachusetts, was recently awarded a $150,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. MHSA is one of 37 non-profit organizations selected from more than 450 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s annual grant program that has helped support organizations providing affordable housing and affordable housing services since 2005.

In recent years the housing affordability crisis has continued to escalate. As individuals and families across the country struggle with inflation and an exponential rise in rental costs, affordable housing providers face increased hardship due to the growing demand for affordable rental units and emergency rental assistance.

The grant will support “A Place to Live,” MHSA’s master leasing program as an innovative way to add newly created housing. MHSA leverages public funding through multiple contracts to operate the leasing side of this program, known technically as sponsor-based permanent supportive housing, and partners with agencies wishing to house and serve people with life-limiting disabilities who are experiencing homelessness. A Place to Live helps ensure that everyone will have a place to live, and the grant from TD Charitable Foundation will assist in managing more of these units.

“We are honored to be a part of TD Charitable Foundation’s significant investment, Housing for Everyone, which will allow MHSA to expand its innovative master leasing program that is a part of our ‘A Place to Live’ efforts. We share TD’s vision that there should be housing for everyone and this program is meant to expedite such housing,” said Joe Finn, President at MHSA.

“These organizations are making it their primary mission to help relieve some of the most vulnerable members of our community — those who are unsheltered or experiencing homelessness due to higher eviction rates as pandemic-era programs have ended or financial insecurity grows through inflation or other factors,” said Paige Carlson-Heim, Director of the TD Charitable Foundation. “Housing for Everyone grant recipients are working closely with TD to improve access by creating innovative solutions that are helping to create a more sustainable and inclusive future for everyone. It is a privilege to support our 2024 Housing for Everyone grant recipients and to continue to be a part of this imperative work.”

Through the 18th annual Housing for Everyone grant competition, the TD Charitable Foundation awarded $7 million across the Bank’s Maine-to-Florida footprint and Michigan to help support affordable housing organizations in preserving affordable rental housing stock; through delivering rental assistance, rehabilitating affordable rental housing properties, and building organizational capacity to address resident sustainability for the long-term. Since 2005, the TD Charitable Foundation has given more than $49 million dollars to non-profit and charitable organizations through the Housing for Everyone grant competition and helped support more than 550 affordable housing projects and initiatives.

The Housing for Everyone grant competition supports TD’s longstanding commitment to community enrichment through TD’s corporate citizenship platform, The TD Ready Commitment, which actively promotes inclusivity, economic vitality and environmental wellbeing, enabling people of all backgrounds to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
